The vMX is a virtual MX Series 3D Universal Edge Router that extends 15+ years of Juniper Networks edge routing expertise to the virtual realm. The vMX is a full-featured, carrier-graderouter with complete control, forwarding and management planes. It runs the JunosOperating System, and supports vTrio packet handling and forwarding by compiling the programmable Junos Trio chipset microcode for x86 chipsets.
The vMX supports sophisticated routing services, including vPE and vCPE, and is ideally suited for rapid service scale out and agile service introduction and modification for both service provider and enterprise applications. With its granular, ‘pay as you grow’ licensing model, the vMX reduces the risk associated with new market entry and service innovation and allows you to start small, move fast, and stay profitable. Here in our LAB setup we are taking a Linux Host Machine and vMX Rouetr ,uniper MX Series Virtual Router. Considering the network of 192.168.0.0/24 subnet.
There are two procedure of running vMX in gNS3 either by Quemu or by VirtualBox. Aproaching VirtualBox is faster and efficient as of now.
From the download link, download the vMX zip file and extract it. The file name as vMX.vdi is required here. .vdi is extension of a kind of virtual hard drive format.
Procedure
Step1 : Creating New Virual Machine from VirtualBox
Now from VirtualBox worspace menue create a new Virtual Machine. Select the type of the VM as Linux Based VM and verson as Other Linux. This settings will build the kernel to boot this particular Junos over Hypervisors.
Recomended Primary memory is 1GB. And then from the VirtualBox settings selectan existing hard drive by choosing either the dropdown or by browse local folders. Here we are going to select the virtual hard drive vMX.vdi.
Step 2: Exporting vMX Virtual Machine Instances onto GNS3
Now we need to export the VM onto GNS3. From preference Select VirtualBox VM and from local VirtualBox VM dropdown select vMX.
Now run the MX VM. You can also select the headless mode to run the VirtualBox vMX instance in background.

The Juniper MX-Series is a family of ethernetrouters and switches designed and manufactured by Juniper Networks. In 2006, Juniper released the first of the MX-series, the MX960, MX240, and MX480. The second generation routers, called MX '3D', were first released in 2009 and featured a new Trio chipset and IPv6 support. In 2013, the MX routers were improved to increase their bandwidth, and a virtualized MX 3D router, the vMX 3D, was released in 2014. Utilizing the Juniper Extension Toolkit (JET), third party software can be integrated into the routers.
History
Early releases
On October 18, 2006, the MX Series was publicly announced.[1] Before its release, Ethernet aggregation was a missing component of Juniper's edge network products, which was causing it to lose market-share to Alcatel.[1] The MX Series was late to market, but it was well received by analysts and customers.[2] It was part of a trend at-the-time to incorporate additional software features in routers and switches.[3]
The first product release of the MX series was the MX960, a 14-slot, 480 Gbit/s switch and router.[1][4][5] In late 2006, Juniper introduced the MX240 and MX480, which are smaller versions of the 960.[6] They had a throughput of 240 Gbit/s and 480 Gbit/s respectively.[7][8]
Further development
In 2009 a new line of MX '3D' products were introduced, using Juniper's programmable Trio chipset.[9]Identify gun by serial number. Trio is a proprietary semiconductor technology with custom network instructions. It provides a cross between network processing units and ASICs.[10] IPv6 features were added[11] and the MX80, a smaller 80Gbit/s router, was introduced the following year.[12]
In 2011 new switch fabric cards increased the capacity of MX 3D routers.[13] In May 2011 Juniper introduced several new products including the MX5, MX10 and MX40 3D routers, which have a throughput of 20, 40 and 60 Gbit/s respectively and can each be upgraded to an MX80.[14] A collection of features called MobileNext was introduced in 2011 at Mobile World Congress, then discontinued in August 2013. According to Network World, it allowed MX 3D products to serve as a mobile 'gateway, an authentication and management control plan for 2G/3G and LTE mobile packet cores and as a policy manager for subscriber management systems.'[15]
In October 2012, Juniper introduced the MX2020 and 2010 3D Universal Edge Routers, with throughputs of 80 Tbit/s and 40 Tbit/s respectively.[16] Juniper also released a video caching system for the MX family and a suite of software applications that include parental control, firewall and traffic monitoring.[16] New 'Virtual Chassis' features allowed network operators to manage multiple boxes as though they were a single router or switch.[12]
Recent developments
In 2013, Juniper introduced new line cards for the MX series and a new switch fabric module, intended to upgrade the MX series' for higher bandwidth needs and for software defined networking applications.[17] The capacity of the MX240, 480 and 960 were increased by double or more.[18] A new Multiservice Modular Interface Card (MS-MIC) was incorporated that supports up to 9 Gbit/s for services like tunneling software.[18]
In March 2013, Juniper released the EX9200 switch, which isn't part of the MX Series, but uses the same software and Trio chipset.[18] A virtualized MX series 3D router, the vMX 3D, was introduced in November 2014.[19] A suite of updates were announced in late 2015. New MPC line cards were introduced, which have a throughput of up to 1.6 Tbit/s. Simultaneously the Juniper Extension Toolkit (JET) was announced.[20] JET is a programming interface for integrating third-party applications that automate provisioning, maintenance and other tasks.[20][21] The Junos Telemetry Interface was also announced at the same time. It reports data to applications and other equipment to automate changes to the network in response to faults or in order optimize performance.[20][21]

It’s becoming hard to obtain a licensed copy of Windows XP. Yet, many IT professionals, including malware analysts, like having Windows XP in their virtualized labs. After all, Windows XP is still running on numerous personal and business systems. Fortunately, you can download a virtualized instance of Windows XP from Microsoft for free if you are running Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate on your base system. Microsoft toolkit 2.6 beta 25016 download. (A variation of this approach seems to work on Windows 8.1, too.)
Microsoft calls this virtualized instance of Windows XP “Windows XP Mode,” and distributes it in the Windows Virtual PC format. If you prefer to use VMware Workstation or VMware Player instead of Virtual PC, follow instructions below.
Free Vmx Download
First, download Windows XP Mode from Microsoft. You’ll need to go through the Windows validation wizard to confirm you’re running a licensed copy of the appropriate version of Windows 7. You’ll have the option of downloading and installing Windows Virtual PC software, but you don’t need it if you’ll be using VMware.
Next, install the downloaded Windows XP Mode executable. The installation wizard will give you a chance to specify where the files installed, placing them in “C:Program FilesWindows XP Mode” by default. This folder will contain, among other files, the 1GB+ file “Windows XP Mode base.vhd” representing the hard drive of the Windows XP virtual machine.
Then, launch VMware Workstation or Player. Go to the File > Import Windows XP Mode VM menu.
VMware will launch the wizard that will automatically create the Windows XP VMware virtual machine using the Windows XP Mode files you installed in the previous step.
Using VMware Workstation or Player, power on the Windows XP Mode virtual machine that VMware created.
Lastly, go through the Windows XP setup wizard within the new virtual machine the same way you would do it for a regular Windows XP system.
At this point, you should have a VMware virtual machine running Windows XP. It will be connected to the network using the VMWare “NAT” mode, so if your base system has Internet access, so would the virtual machine.
If using VMware Workstation, take a snapshot of your newly setup Windows XP virtual machine, in case something goes wrong later.
There two other ways of obtaining Windows virtual machines, both using Windows Virtual PC. In both cases, you can download Windows Virtual PC files and convert them into the VMware format by using VMware vCenter Converter or by using File > Import or Export… in VMware Workstation. You can download Windows XP, Vista and 7 virtual machines from Microsoft’s Internet Explorer Application Compatibility VPC Image page. You can also download Windows XP and Vista VMs from the NIST Federal Desktop Core Configuration FDCC page. You’ll need to supply valid Windows licenses to activate these OS instances; you may be able to use them for some time period in a limited manner without activation.
